Tour inside historic Edsel and Eleanor Ford House

Jensen's son was contracted later on to install the new garden area which has a reflecting pool and does not have the natural stylizing of the rest of the grounds. Instead he opted for finely trimmed bushes and square grassy areas. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games.

The Best Things to do for Christmas in Los Angeles

Our lakeside event spaces make the perfect setting for your private event. This adorable home stands out on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. The rumor is that this house was owned by Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. You can park in one of the beach parking lots and walk down to the home or park by one of the neighbors. PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19.

This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live.

Preparing for Your Visit

You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. The Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22) was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and built in 1959. Perched in the Hollywood hills above the city, the Stahl House is an icon of Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by. The Avila Adobe is LA’s oldest house still standing in its original location, and is designated as California Historic Landmark #145. Originally built in 1818 by Francisco José Avila, it has since been the home to many of his family members and descendants. It even served as military headquarters in the late 1840s.

Roaming the scenic grounds and architectural home, the two of you will capture the excitement of your engagement at a location steeped in Detroit’s rich and formative history. Edsel and Eleanor Ford placed love above all, raising their four children in this very house. Perhaps it will bring you good luck as you look ahead to life as a married couple. Beacons of the arts, culture and philanthropy, the Fords collected original paintings by Matisse, Cezanne and more. A work of art in their own right, the breathtaking grounds were designed by famed landscape architect Jens Jensen. The meadow, rockwork and water components appear to be almost completely natural but were meticulously planned.

One hidden passage led to the garage area where Edsel Ford went to meet his chauffeured transportation. On some occasions he traveled in his boat to get to the Ford Rouge Plant. He dug a channel and used the sand to create Bird Island, which attracts migrating birds and has a path for viewers. The library on the first floor was the family room for the Fords.

Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955. In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924.

Los Angeles is known around the world for its masterpieces of residential architecture. Famous fans of these landmark designs include Ice Cube and Moby. From Mid-Century Modern icons to LA's first World Heritage Site to the city's oldest house, discover some of the most famous houses in Los Angeles.

In the 1930s, Edsel hired famed industrial designer and Ford Motor Company collaborator Walter Dorwin Teague to redecorate four rooms. Teague created rich and original designs using a sleek, modern Machine-Age aesthetic. Later in the 1950s after Edsel’s passing, Eleanor hired friend and interior decorator Polly Jessup to design spaces that reflected her taste and highlighted her collection of fine art and antique furniture. The house was designed by prominent architect Albert Kahn, known for his work on several iconic structures in Detroit and industrial design in Ford Motor Co. factories. The look of Edsel and Eleanor’s house was inspired by Cotswold-style cottages in England.

From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting. The site operated as the popular Sand & Sea Club for decades, then sat vacant and boarded up for years until the city of Santa Monica announced plans to renovate and reopen it as a public beach facility. Renowned philanthropist Wallis Annenberg donated $27.5 million to the cause. During the renovation, all of the remaining original structures from the Hearst days were demolished, except for a 110-foot Italian marble swimming pool and one of the guest homes, now known as the Marion Davies Guest House.

Roughly 100 people attended the fall ceremony, held at Clay’s uncle’s house, department store tycoon J.L. The Danish landscape architect Jens Jensen (1860–1951) came to know Edsel Ford through work Jensen had done for his parents, Clara and Henry Ford, at Fair Lane, their Dearborn, Michigan, estate. There Jensen had created rockwork along the Rouge River and expansive tree- and flower-bordered meadows aligned to the path of the setting sun. The last of these was begun in 1927, on Lake St. Clair, north of Detroit. Their 1916 wedding united two of Detroit's most important clans.

The white, yellow, and blue color scheme was reiterated in the nearby rose garden. The most recent restoration project was to replace the sandstone pillars on the outside of the lakefront patio, which had started to crack around the upper edges. To ensure complete historical accuracy the foundation contracted a firm from the same region from where the original stone was purchased. Ford House is a 501c3 nonprofit and National Historic Landmark. Experience the historic family home of Edsel Ford, the only son of Henry Ford, and his wife, Eleanor. Visitors from all over the world come to wander, wonder, and explore the beauty of this 1928 National Historic Landmark and uncover a unique piece of the American automotive story in metro Detroit.

In the dining room a large table was beautifully set as well as a smaller table. The docent noted that there was no chandelier because Eleanor preferred candlelight. The smaller table was for the children and their governess. Eventually, they had four children and settled at their estate on Gaulker Pointe in Grosse Pointe Shores. To create just the right look and one that’s historically accurate, StudioEIS studied family photos, portraits and clothing. All estate policies, including prohibited equipment and estate guidelines, will be outlined in the photography session contract.
